CSO Presents: Weill – From Berlin to Broadway

Dive into the decadent and darkly humorous world of Kurt Weill, spanning the 1920s to the 1940s, from the glitz of Germany’s Weimar Republic to the glittering lights of Broadway. Having risen to fame in his home country in the 1920s, and forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933 for the United States, Weill reinvented his style and incorporated American elements, writing music that supported the American war effort. He also wrote a number of musicals, including Threepenny Opera, Street Scene and Mahagonny.

Conductor Luke Di Somma returns to lead the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and talented stage stars Amelia Berry, Phoebe Hurst and Kristian Lavercombe in a showcase of Weill’s most famous works, including Mack the Knife and Pirate Jenny, as well as the flurry of songs that were inspired by him, like Cabaret.

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

In 1958, under the vision and direction of Professor John Ritchie, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra was formed.

Now celebrating our 60th anniversary, the CSO has become a 21st century community asset to the people of our region. As well as presenting more than 30 diverse concerts each year, from Mozart to the music of Moana, and accompanying the performances of other arts organisations such as New Zealand Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet, our reach extends beyond the stage.

Our award-winning Community Engagement Programme reaches more than 10,000 people in the South Island through our Karawhiua! Let’s Play residency programme, school visits, retirement village recitals, masterclasses, workshops, and more.

In 2016, the CSO received a Highly-Commended certificate in the Arts Access Awards for their collaboration with Christchurch dance company Jolt Interactive.
