Bio
Alex Vaatstra is a dedicated violin and viola teacher based in Ngaio, Wellington. He teaches a wide range of students privately, from age four and up, with a strong focus on building solid fundamentals and developing a fluid, comfortable technique.
Alex holds a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance and Pedagogy, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. He is fully registered with both the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand and the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.
In addition to his teaching, Alex is an active performer. He plays with Orchestra Wellington and has freelanced with numerous other classical and contemporary ensembles. Alongside his private studio, Alex also teaches at five secondary schools throughout the Wellington region.
Teaching Info
Beginner students can expect to have lessons that focus on ear training, technical development and having fun learning the violin. More advanced students will work on advanced technique and interpretation.

I carefully plans lessons so that they are individually tailored to meet the needs of each student.

He intuitively follows the child and uses methods which are most suitable to that child’s way of learning. He loves to teach and it shows. He also likes to continually challenge himself and improve his own technique and his methods, and that makes a great teacher.”
Im experienced with supporting students taking ABRSM, Trinity College and NZMEB exams.
I provide students with opportunities to perform in my studio concerts, local festivals and competitions, and I encourage my students to play in orchestras.
