Hi, I’m Letitia
I’m a private singing teacher, vocal technique instructor, and vocal coach based in Whataupoko, Gisborne.
Whether you’ve never sung before, are returning after time away, or are refining an established voice, my goal is to help you develop the knowledge and skills to become the best singer you can be.
My Teaching Philosophy
At the heart of my teaching is a simple belief: I believe anyone with a functional voice can learn to sing.
Although every voice is unique, we all share the same fundamental vocal instrument.
Think of a guitar. The same guitar can be used to play any genre or style of music. The instrument isn’t limited by style or genre—what it can produce depends on the knowledge and skill of the person playing it. The same principle applies to the voice.
Rather than simply teaching songs or focusing on how a voice sounds, I help singers understand why their voice behaves the way it does. That understanding allows you to recognise what’s happening in your voice, make effective adjustments, and develop the knowledge and skills to use your voice to its full potential.
Looking Beyond the Sound
No two people learn to use their voice in exactly the same way. Our anatomy, habits, experiences, strengths, and coordination all influence how we sing, which is why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
The sound a singer produces provides valuable information about what’s happening beneath the surface. By interpreting what I hear, I can identify strengths, recognise the underlying causes of vocal challenges, and determine the most effective way forward.
My teaching draws on contemporary vocal technique, Bel Canto foundations, contemporary voice science, and evidence-based vocal pedagogy, with every lesson tailored to the individual, their goals, and their stage of development.
My Story
Originally from South Africa, I relocated to New Zealand in 2011.
My musical background spans more than four decades and includes classical and contemporary singing, choir leadership, professional performance, recording, songwriting, composition, music production, audio engineering, voice-over work, and the release of an original contemporary album.
My journey as a singer has had a profound influence on the way I teach. I once believed my voice had limitations and that I would never become the singer I wanted to be. It was only through learning and training that I discovered those beliefs weren’t true.
You don’t always know what your voice is truly capable of until you understand how it works and learn how to develop and use it effectively.
My role isn’t to create your voice—it’s to help you understand, develop, and discover the full potential of the unique voice you already have, but may not yet have uncovered.
