Bio
Hello! I’m Andy Roberts, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist from the USA, now based in Tauranga (Bay of Plenty) for the past 10+ years. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education (ECE-13) and have over a decade of experience teaching and performing across the US and New Zealand.
I specialize in Woodwinds (clarinet, saxophone, flute, and recorder) and Drums/Percussion (Drum Kit, Multi/Orchestral Percussion) offering tuition in both solo and ensemble settings/Studio Work. I’ve taught privately, in schools, and worked as a music director, clinician, and competition adjudicator. My background includes classical, jazz, rock/pop, blues, Latin, and contemporary styles.
I’ve performed with the Plainview Symphony Orchestra, toured Europe with the Wayland Baptist Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and collaborated with artists and ensembles in Texas and New Zealand. I also provide coaching for NCEA Music, theory exams, and university auditions.
I maintain a busy teaching schedule but always welcome new students, from beginners to advanced learners. Whether you’re preparing for an exam, audition, or just want to improve your skills, I’m here to help. Feel free to get in touch!
Teaching Info
Every student learns differently, and I tailor my lessons to suit individual goals and learning styles. Lessons are structured, progressive, and rooted in technique, musicality, and enjoyment.
A typical lesson may include:
-
Daily warm-ups (tone, embouchure, breathing, posture, stick control, rudiments, etc.)
-
Technical studies (Scales, Arpeggios, finger/tongue speed, dexterity, stick work, Singles/Doubles/Accents)
-
Artistic etudes across genres and key signatures
-
Sight-reading and ear training
-
Theory, composition, and improvisation
-
Repertoire development for performances or exams
-
Goal setting and custom feedback after each session
I work with students from ECE through adult learners, including NCEA, university-level music, and those returning to music later in life. My teaching is warm, patient, and structured for real growth.
