Bio
Kia ora!
I’m a Wellington-based multi-disciplinary artist, passionate about music in all its forms—whether I’m on stage or in the studio. My journey as a musician has taken me across Aotearoa and around the world, performing as a saxophonist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and bandleader. I’ve been playing woodwinds for over 20 years and am still excited to be learning, improving, and enjoying the journey every step of the way.
I’ve had the privilege of co-founding the band TOI and serving as lead alto saxophonist with the Rodger Fox Big Band. Over the years, I’ve worked on a wide range of musical projects across genres—from jazz and pop to contemporary collaborative works that reflect Aotearoa’s diverse creative landscape. My playing features on over 100 recordings, most notably with L.A.B, Bret McKenzie, Creative Nātives, and more, as well as on releases with my jazz quartet, the pop group NOVA, and other solo and collaborative projects.
Career highlights include opening for international acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tash Sultana, performing with jazz legends Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl, and co-writing the official song for the 2024 NZ Olympic Team.
Highlights lately include performing at major festivals both nationally and internationally—including WOMAD, Over The Ditch, and the Tauranga Jazz Festival—opening for Fat Freddy’s Drop, and co-organising and leading a 100+ person street parade down Cuba Street for CubaDupa (Mass Frevo Orchestra). The parade brought together musicians of all ages and abilities for a vibrant, high-energy celebration of live performance and community—a truly wonderful experience!
Teaching Info
Teaching has been a major part of my journey. From 2020–2023, I was Artist Teacher of Saxophones at Te Kōkī—New Zealand School of Music—also directing Latin/fusion ensembles, big band, and combo classes. I’ve taught across primary, secondary, tertiary, private lessons, clinics, and masterclasses for over 11 years.
My teaching blends a mix of student-led and teacher-guided learning, supporting curiosity, strong technical foundations, improvisation, and musicianship. I centre classes around collaboration and clear, personalised goals. I take pride in thoughtful preparation and curating material that best supports each student’s growth. At the heart of my approach is the Tuakana–Teina philosophy: a reciprocal learning relationship that breaks down hierarchy and allows us to meet on the same page.
My lessons are best suited to intermediate and advanced musicians—or motivated beginners ready to dive in. Whether you’re refining your tone, improvisation, or preparing for performance, I tailor each session to help you reach your next level. Beginner students are welcome if they’re ready to commit to structured learning. I offer a supportive, focused environment to help you grow from day one.
I look forward to hearing from you!
