Bio

Described as an “outstanding musician with potential for exceptional success,” Flautist Anastasia Bell received the Cecily Macoll High Achiever Award as part of the Dame Malvina Major Arts Excellence Awards in 2023, a testament to her talent and dedication. This went toward a Summer Intensive Programme at the Michigan University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the Flute Institute under the tutelage of renowned flautist Amy Porter and other musicians from around America, in which Anastasia had received a scholarship and grants from various trusts.

Anastasia is currently the Principal Flute of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra and Burnside High School Orchestra (Specialist Music Programme), as she has been for many years. She has lead her ensembles to gaining several prestigious awards including Platinum awards at the National MEFA competition, and Gold awards at both the Aurora Festival and Christchurch Wind Festival, along with ‘Best Flute Section.’

In 2023, Anastasia competed in the National Concerto Competiton, and received a Highly Commended Award at the National Chamber Music Competition, with Conductor and Musical Director Dr. Helen Renaud describing Anastasia as a “Highly Competent Chamber Musician and strong academic student.” In 2024, Anastasia is a Conducting Fellow with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and too has been part of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra Virtuosi Programme.

Teaching Info

Because of her modern, integrated teaching style and inclusive demeanour, Anastasia has been described as a teacher who naturally inspires students through the rapid progress her advice has on how her students perform.

From a beginner level, students should expect to be thoroughly taught the basics of breathing, making sound, and music theory, whilst moving through repertoire quickly and in a fun way. A focus will be on technique, articulation, tone, breath control, dynamics, tuning, and strengthening coordination.

Intermediate to Advanced students will have music taken to more advanced concepts including depth of sound, vibrato, reducing tension, and tone colour.

All students will gain a solid foundation in which musical ideas and intentions can be expressed confidently! Anastasia too ensures that all students remain enthusiastic about music, and have sufficient knowledge of performance psychology to achieve set ambitions.
