Bio

Anna is a Russian mezzo-soprano and vocal coach currently based in Auckland.

She graduated from the Tchaikovsky Academic Music College and the Victor Popov Academy of Choral Art in Moscow, and is a laureate of several international vocal competitions held in Russia.

During her career, Anna has performed both as a soloist and in opera ensembles. In Moscow she sang the role of Olga in Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, and in New Zealand she performed with NZ Opera and Wellington Opera Chorus, taking part in productions including Don Giovanni (2021) and the project Voices of Aotearoa 6:24.

Alongside her performing career, Anna has over seven years of teaching experience in Moscow, Wellington and Auckland, including more than a year of teaching at Rata Studios in Wellington.

Her teaching combines classical technique with a gentle, body-based approach that connects breath, posture and emotion.

Known for her warm, empathetic manner, Anna creates a safe and nurturing space where students can explore and express themselves freely. She especially enjoys guiding people who believe they “can’t sing” — helping them realise how natural, beautiful and effortless their voice can be.

Alongside private lessons, Anna also supports high-school students preparing for NCEA Music Performance Standards (Performance only).

Teaching Info

Anna’s lessons are calm, encouraging and individually tailored.

She approaches teaching as a shared exploration rather than a top-down instruction — guiding students gently, listening deeply, and supporting each person’s unique process of growth.

Lessons include technical work (breath, tone, resonance, articulation) and body awareness exercises to release tension and build vocal confidence.

Students learn to connect their sound with their body and emotions, finding freedom and authenticity in their singing.

Anna’s teaching style draws from Russian and Italian vocal traditions as well as somatic and mindful voice practices.

Her sessions are ideal for beginners and intermediate singers who wish to explore their authentic voice in a safe, nurturing environment.

For students working toward NCEA Music (Performance), Anna provides gentle, practical support with repertoire, stage presence and expressive performance.

For me, the lessons are hugely valuable because they allow me to express myself and explore my creativity and who I am.  I like to think I am a creative person, but I don’t often express myself openly and honestly, maybe because I feel like I need to be polite or diplomatic, or I am worried about upsetting someone, or because I feel like I need to make other people comfortable. The singing lessons with Anna give me a way of exploring different emotions in a more honest, less filtered way and through songs that I like or find interesting. I think the most important aspect of our work together is about becoming more comfortable with expressing my emotions and learning to do this is a way that feels fun, honest and unguarded. When we have a lesson in which I am singing well, I feel happier, more relaxed and more confident afterwards. I also feel more in tune with my body and with the space I am in.
