Bio

Ben Hunt is a freelance musician and educator based in Pōneke Wellington. Originally from Hawke’s Bay, he has made a name for himself as a versatile, in-demand trumpet player. He writes and performs original music with local brass-heavy party bands Richter City Rebels, Raw Collective, and Niko Ne Zna, and is part of the L.A.B. horn section. He holds the rank of Sergeant within the RNZAF Band and spent 10 years with the esteemed Rodger Fox Big Band.

Ben has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival (USA) and JEN Conference (USA), as well as most of Aoteaora’s major festivals including Rhythm and Vines, WOMAD, Splore, Electric Avenue, Homegrown, Tauranga Jazz Festival, and Wellington Jazz Festival. On a session basis Ben has worked with artists ranging from Lalah Hathaway and the NZSO, Orchestra Wellington, The Black Seeds, Troy Kingi, Tami Nielson, Shapeshifter, and Whirimako Black.

Ben has been teaching in the Wellington region for over 15 years and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers NZ. Currently he holds a position as an Artist Teacher in the jazz programme at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music where he teaches trumpet, improvisation, and ensembles.

While he was a university and school student Ben received formal tuition from: Alexis French, Vaughn Roberts, Cheryl Hollinger, Nick van Dijk, David Apperley, John Snowling, and John Page.

On a casual basis he has also had lessons with: Bobby Shew (via Zoom), Charley Davis, Roger Ingram, Jeremy Pelt (via Zoom), Charlie Porter (via Zoom), Alex Sipiagin, Scott Wendholt, Clay Jenkins, Kevin Dean, Rex Richardson, Paul Benistan, Sam Thousand, Eugene Ball, Dave Newdick, Jon Dante, Mike Kirgan, Mark Carter, and Matt Allison

Teaching Info

I believe that playing music should be a fun, enjoyable, rewarding experience. Trumpet is an incredibly versatile instrument and as such I like to teach music in a wide range of styles, along with developing a solid technical foundation.
