Bio

Ben Hunt is a freelance musician and teacher based in Wellington, New Zealand. Since graduating from the New Zealand School of Music with a PGDipMus and BMus (jazz) in 2011, Ben has made a name for himself as a versatile, in-demand trumpet player.

With over 10 years of teaching experience Ben is an associate member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers (IRMT) NZ. He is the itinerant trumpet teacher at St. Mark’s School, and taught at Wellington College 2016-2020, Rathkeale College 2012-2017, and Rongotai College 2008-2012. He is currently an Artist Teacher at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music.

Ben is an original member of the New Orleans brass band Richter City Rebels and hip-hop band Raw Collective, and has been in the Balkan brass band Niko Ne Zna since 2008. He holds the rank of Sergeant within the RNZAF Band and was a member of the Rodger Fox Big Band for 10 years.

As a session player Ben has performed live with: The Black Seeds, Troy Kingi, Tami Nielson, and recorded with Shapeshifter, Louis Baker, and TOI.

In 2012/13 Ben spent eight months working as a trumpet player onboard Princess cruise ships, travelling through the Mediterranean, Baltic, Caribbean, and South America.

Other bands Ben performs with include: Lisa Tomlins and the Presidents of Funk, Superbad Soul Section, Wellington Mingus Ensemble, Gold Nugget Pawn Shop, and Hip-Town Bangers. In a past life he played percussion for the NZSO National Youth Orchestra (2006-2011).


Teaching Info

I believe that playing music should be a fun, enjoyable, rewarding experience. Trumpet is an incredibly versatile instrument and as such I like to teach music in a wide range of styles, along with developing a solid technical foundation.
