Bio
Chanelle performed her first piano concert age 4, proudly announcing her song to the crowd wearing white knee-high socks and a beautiful 80’s mullet haircut. That was the beginning, and since then she has followed her passion for music, living a colourful life as a teacher, songwriter, performer and recording artist.
Chanelle studied classical piano through ABRSM and then graduated with a Bachelor degree in contemporary music at Waikato Institute Of Technology where she discovered a love of jazz, blues and pop. She ran her own successful piano teaching studio in Melbourne for 5 years with a roster of 40 students. Alongside private music teaching, Chanelle has released her own original albums, performed on TV shows like Good Morning and What Now, toured NZ and taught songwriting seminars to large groups. In 2013 she won the APRA New Zealand’s Best Children’s Song Award and in 2017 released her debut album for children ‘The Little Green Turtle and Other Songs for Kids!’ which was a finalist for Best Children’s Music Album 2018. Other awards include NZ Songwriters Trust best song 2007 ‘Dear Jon’ and 2018 ‘I Love You’.
Chanelle is great at empowering her students to practise and will quickly discover what each one needs to achieve great results AND have fun while they’re doing it. Performing is always encouraged and students will have the opportunity to take the stage at regular concerts which are fun events for everyone involved.
Adult students welcome! Take part in intimate evening gatherings where you can share you music with other adult students in a relaxed environment, usually paired with wine and cheese.
Video lessons – send me a copy of your sheet music and a video of you playing it and I will send you a video back with my feedback to help you improve. This is great if you are teaching yourself but maybe need a little extra guidance and the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing everything right.
Teaching Info
Expect to work through a method book to build a great foundation as well learn a piece of music of your choice. I often have themed concerts – movie songs, Christmas, duets, Elton vs Billy etc. which we learn pieces for. I am a very flexible teacher so can tailor your lesson and goals for you.
Younger kids – I use xylophone, singing, floor mat piano etc to create a fun lesson until they are ready to be at the piano for 30min.
