Bio
Kia ora! My name is Daniel Potter and I am a Dunedin based music teacher and musician. I am currently a classroom music teacher and am returning to offering private lessons on guitar, bass guitar, and double bass, having previously been a private tutor and itinerant music teacher in the intermediate and high school system from 2013-2018. I am passionate about working alongside young people and adults in their music journeys, guiding them to realise their potential, build confidence, and explore their musical passions. I believe teaching with a student-centred approach and building positive rapport enables students to reach their full potential.
I am a regular gigging musician with a little over 20 years experience, having performed in a wide variety of groups on bass and guitar. I am currently the bass player for the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra and double bass player for gypsy jazz group Djangocalypse Trio. I have played in over 25 musicals (highlights include Sister Act – 2026, That Bloody Woman – 2021, Mary Poppins – 2017), have enjoyed previous work with songwriters and performers such as Bill Morris, Ryan Caldwell, Sam Manzanza Afrobeat Band, and Tahu and the Takahes, and am a regular on-call player for local covers bands and jazz groups.
Teaching Info
I offer 30 minute or 60 minute one on one lessons, covering a broad range of genres such as rock, pop, jazz, blues, and including students’ musical interests. I teach students of most ages, generally starting from 10+. I believe in teaching with a student-centred approach, tailoring the content for each student with their input.
