New Zealand clarinetist David McGregor studied with Philip Green (Associate Principal Clarinet, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, former NZSO) at Victoria University of Wellington from 2011 to 2014. While studying in Wellington, he also played in the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band in section and principal positions. He was principal clarinet of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra from 2012 to 2014, and has also been a frequent guest principal player with Orchestra Wellington and a guest section player with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2013.
In 2015 he moved to Hobart, Tasmania, where he studied with Francesco Celata (Associate Principal Clarinet, Sydney Symphony) at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music. In 2016, he appeared as soloist with the Wellington Chamber Orchestra, performing Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No.2 with conductor and fellow NZSM alum Vincent Hardaker.
David was proud to have been selected as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Clarinet Fellow for 2017. The year involved him playing frequently with the orchestra, most often playing E-flat clarinet, though he performed in many positions in a number of concerts. David’s role as an SSO Fellow allowed him to perform in mixed chamber ensembles with the other fellows in Central Sydney, as well as regional NSW. The role also involved education work and outreach which was an absolute highlight, where fellows would participate, and present masterclasses and workshops to students in the greater Sydney area.
David returned to New Zealand in 2018, when he was appointed Principal Clarinet of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Alongside his work with the CSO, David teaches clarinet and music students of all ages, ranging from primary school, to tertiary and beyond!
David teaches students of all ages in Christchurch, New Zealand. Lessons are available for students of all abilities and goals. David loves orchestral and chamber music, so lessons may also include duets and a look orchestral excerpts for advanced students looking to play for the various orchestras and ensembles around town. For beginners, David has a relaxed approach and will help guide the student to build good technical habits, while maintaining a sense of fun with some short pieces from various clarinet methods.
