Hello! My name is Eilish and I am an experienced saxophone, clarinet, and flute teacher living in Wellington. I began learning music at age 7 and took up the saxophone at age 11. Since then, I have completed an Honours degree in Jazz Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, gaining First-Class. I now teach privately, itinerantly at St Patrick’s College (town), and also a theory/aural class + jazz combo as part of the New Zealand School of Music’s Young Musicians Programme.
In the past few years, I have been on the adjudicators panel for youth competitions such as the New Zealand School of Music Jazz Project and the Manawatu Jazz Festival. I have been involved with running big band and saxophone workshops around the country for the Rodger Fox Big Band Jazz Gala tours.
I’ve also had the great opportunity to tour nationally alongside artists including the New Zealand String Quartet, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Tony Lindsay, Holly Hofmann, Bruce Forman, James Carter, Lydia Pense, Robben Ford, Hollie Smith, Chris Cain, Mark Williams, Michael Houstoun, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Dick Oatts, Adam Schroeder, and Eric Marienthal. Currently, I play in the famed Rodger Fox Big Band. In September 2017 the band embarked on a month long tour of the United States, playing in L.A. and Oakland, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and recording an album at the renowned United Studios. More recently, I performed with the band at the JEN (Jazz Education Network) Conference in New Orleans, and recorded an album of music by New Zealand composers at the acclaimed Bunker Studios in Brooklyn, New York City.
I also play regularly around town with Birds of Paradise, Lisa Tomlins’ Soul Collective, Fun ⅋ Funner, the Mellow Tones, the Wellington Mingus Ensemble, It’s Uptown!, Two for Percy, hip-hop band Raw Collective, and soul/dub band Dr. Reknaw.
I teach musicality, improvisation, technical skills, practical music theory and performance skills. I aim to maintain an ongoing conversation with my students about their musical goals and interests in order to help them develop in areas they wish to pursue as musicians. Lessons are positive and focused on getting the best out of each individual student and their broader musical goals.
I am interested in and have performed a wide range of music, and encourage students to explore and work on music which they find most enjoyable.
Update: August 2020
