Hello! My name is Eilish and I am a saxophone, clarinet, and flute teacher living in Wellington. I began learning music at age 7 and took up the saxophone at age 11. Since then, I have completed an Honours degree in Jazz Performance at the NZ School of Music, gaining First-Class. I now teach at Island Bay Music Centre, itinerantly at St Patrick’s College (town), Kapiti College, Paraparaumu College, and also a Jazz Combo class as part of the NZ School of Music’s Young Musician Programme.
I have performed and toured nationally alongside artists including, the New Zealand String Quartet, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Tony Lindsay, James Carter, Lydia Pense, Robben Ford, Hollie Smith, Chris Cain, Mark Williams, Michael Houstoun, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Dick Oatts, Adam Schroeder, and Eric Marienthal. Currently, I play in the famed Rodger Fox Big Band. In September 2017 the band embarked on a month long tour of the United States, playing in L.A. and Oakland, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and recording an album at the renowned United Studios.
I also play regularly around town with the Troubles, the Mellow Tones, the Wellington Mingus Ensemble, It’s Uptown!, Two for Percy, hip-hop band Raw Collective, Dr. Reknaw, What a Treat, the Vanguards, as well as running my own duo and trio, and performing at high-profile events and corporate functions.
I teach musicality, improvisation, technical skills, practical music theory and performance skills. I aim to maintain an ongoing conversation with my students about their musical goals and interests in order to help them develop in areas they wish to pursue as musicians. Lessons are positive and focused on getting the best out of each individual student and his/her broader musical goals.
I am interested in and have performed a wide range of music, and encourage students to explore and work on music which they find most enjoyable.
