Bio

Providing a sound musical foundation is so important!

Genevieve has been teaching piano since 2005 after gaining her dip ATCL in piano performance from Trinity College. Her first teaching job was as itinerant piano teacher at Paparoa Street Primary School in Papanui, where she taught for 16 years, preparing children for ABRSM and Trinity piano and theory exams. Genevieve also accompanied the children in the school operettas and held end of year recitals for the children.

Genevieve taught piano at Christchurch schools including Christchurch Girls High School for 6 years, preparing the girls for their NCEA piano performance modules, and accompanying occasionally for the instrumental exams. Other itinerant teaching positions were Diamond Harbour Primary School, Roydvale Primary School and Little River School.

A committee member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers for a time, and an associate of the IRMT, Genevieve enjoys ongoing professional development. She teaches on a Hamburg Steinway grand piano at her home.

Genevieve has taught hundreds of students and assisted in ABRSM and Trinity piano exam prep.

Teaching Info

Each student is unique and I use a musical holistic approach. I incorporate a mixture of improvisation, duetting, singing, composition, musicianship, sightreading, scales, arpeggios and chords if these are relevant. I concentrate on what my student wants to learn.

I understand that relaxation of the muscles and good posture and movement, is integral to learning correctly. I teach the student first, and then the instrument.

I am quirky, fun, and sensitive to the needs of each individual student, whether they be neurodiverse or neurotypical.

Incorporating fun and laughter into lessons, is important to me. I provide achievement incentives for my for students such as prize box, and 40 Piece Challenge in piano and theory.

I have an elderly cat. named Mistletoe, and students are allowed to give her treats during the lesson or let her chase her toy.

I offer my students the opportunity to perform in an end of year student piano recital at Fat Eddies Jazz Club in the summer, an optional highlight for many of my students, and we have prizegiving too.
