Bio
Indiana Bell is a passionate and accomplished violinist, currently a member of the 2025 New Zealand National Youth Orchestra and Concertmaster of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.
In 2024, she completed a year-long performance music course at the University of Canterbury with A grades, was awarded the Liedertafel Male Voice Choir Scholarship and the Christchurch School of Music’s Robert Perks Scholarship, and served as Assistant Concertmaster of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. Her recent notable performances include appearing as a featured soloist with the Liedertafel Male Voice Choir, performing in Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park 2024, and participating in Christchurch composer Rakuto Kurano’s Chapter Five South Island music tour.
Indiana has performed extensively in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings, and has developed a strong reputation for her versatility across a range of styles, including classical, fiddle, bluegrass, pop, and jazz.
Her musical journey began at Halswell Primary School, where she quickly gained recognition, earning multiple placings in the Music Awards. At Cobham Intermediate, she led both the Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, was awarded the Cup for Musical Leadership, and was selected for the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival Orchestra.
Indiana was accepted into the prestigious Specialist Music Programme at Burnside High School, where she received excellence endorsements in NCEA Music each year and gained wide performance experience, including collaborations with Professor Mark Menzies and the University of Canterbury Strings. She was a consistent award-winner throughout her time at Burnside, participating in the Gold Award-winning Burnside Orchestra and several chamber ensembles competing in the NZCT Chamber Music Competitions. In 2021, she was selected as a violin soloist to perform Galway Gal with Magna Voce at the Big Sing Regional Competition.
In her final year of high school, she reached the Regional and South Island Finals of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, served as Assistant Concertmaster of the Burnside Orchestra, co-led the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s “Virtuosi” Second Violin section, and sat the Scholarship Music Exam.
Indiana’s early chamber music experience was shaped by performing with her sisters in The Bellbird Trio, initially busking and later playing at weddings, festivals, and private events.
Today, Indiana remains passionate about sharing music with others, fostering creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love for the violin.

There is a 1/8 size violin available to try out and borrow which is suitable for students aged between 4 and 6 years old.
In my lessons, I believe that personalized learning is key. As your instructor, I prioritize patience and individualized attention to ensure each student progresses at their own pace. In our lessons, students can expect a supportive environment where their unique learning styles and goals are embraced. I tailor my teaching materials to suit each student’s needs, whether they’re beginners mastering the basics or advanced players refining their techniques. Through a combination of classical repertoire, fiddle tunes, technique exercises, and musical theory, I aim to foster a comprehensive understanding of the violin while nurturing a passion for music.
