Bio
I have taught piano and flute and recorder to pupils of all ages for many years and love the opportunity this provides to share the gift of music.
I enjoy teaching all levels from absolute beginner to advanced and all styles from classical through to contemporary – including pop, jazz, film and computer game music.
My pupils have had excellent success in music exams including recently: ATCL piano diploma (equivalent to 1st year university) 93% / Grade 7 piano 98% / 3 x Grade 89%, 92%, 94% / Grade 3 recorder 87%
Since 2020 I have developed an effective method for teaching online which combines video and recorded lessons. This is an option that may suit some people.
As well as my teaching I also conduct a Community Orchestra and a Youth Orchestra which I founded 30 and 15 years ago respectively. This has given me the opportunity to work with people of all ages and stages in their musical journey and helped me to fully realise the huge value that music has in many people’s lives.
Teaching Info
Lessons are relaxed but focused. I enjoy using gentle humour and LOTS of encouragement to build confidence in my pupils. For piano beginners I generally use the Piano Adventures course which introduces various styles such as classical, jazz and pop and some basic improvisation. After 2 or 3 years I often introduce some exam music into the mix as this includes excellent pieces and gives pupils a clear indication of what level they are at.
I am also very open to music suggested by my pupils and have really enjoyed discovering and teaching many of these pieces over the years.
