I am a NZ violinist, recently returned from Sydney to take up a position with the NZSO. Over the 13 years I spent in Australia I worked with various orchestras including the Opera Australia Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Before moving to Sydney I completed studies in violin performance at the Auckland University School of Music, and then studied at the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands. I love playing chamber music and am passionate about cultivating a love of music and musicianship in students of all ages. Of particular interest to me, in both my own playing and my teaching, is the development of an awareness of the body and the mechanics of using it well. This is fundamental to being able to develop freedom of expression through a relaxed violin technique while also helping to prevent injury, and also extends to everyday life activities beyond the violin.
With younger students I incorporate aspects of the Suzuki method into my teaching, with a special focus on listening. I also bring my own advanced knowledge of violin technique to all levels that I teach, with an expectation that good technique needs to be established from the outset. With younger students I ask that parents attend the lessons and support the child’s home practice.
