Bio

My first musical instrument was the Tenor Horn at the age of 8, playing in a local Brass Band. I commenced piano lessons at the age of 10.

At age 12, I sat my first Trinity Piano Exam – Grade 4 (achieving 97%). Under the guidance of Vivienne McLean (Dunedin), I progressed to passing the ATCL Exam (Teachers) at the age of 20.

I took a break from piano teaching as I pursued a career in Nursing and Midwifery, as well as raising a family of three children. Ten years ago, after retiring from Nursing, I resumed piano teaching. I have been teaching up on the Hibiscus Coast ever since.

I play the keyboard as part of the Music Team at Orewa Community Church, and I am an active member of the Hibiscus Coast Music Teachers Group. I am an Associate member of the IRMTNZ.

My primary focus is teaching beginner students up to around Grade 5 level. I have prepared a number of my students for Trinity Exams, with consistently excellent results. There is a wide range of abilities, personalities and learning needs amongst my 40+ students, and thus I work at adapting my teaching style and approach accordingly. I firmly believe in a positive and encouraging environment in teaching the piano, so as to ignite the joy and passion of achieving this valuable life long skill.

Teaching Info

I utilise the Piano Adventures and Alfred Premier Piano Course books, as well as Trinity Exam material (scales, aural, musical knowledge, pieces). Music Theory is incorporated into the lessons right from the start, by means of workbooks.
