Welcome to Ōtautahi Contemporary School of Music (ŌCSM)!
Ōtautahi Contemporary School of Music (ŌCSM) helps students build the skills and confidence to make music their own.
Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, our team of specialist tutors offers lessons across instruments, singing, songwriting and music production, with studio, school, mobile and online options.
Finding the right teacher can make a real difference to how much you enjoy learning and the progress you make. We take time to understand your musical interests, goals and learning preferences, helping you find a tutor whose experience and teaching style suit you.
Our three learning pathways, Introductory, Development and Specialised support students at different stages of their musical journey. Together, they provide opportunities to get started, build on existing skills and pursue more focused musical goals.
Teaching Info
Great lessons begin with a strong connection between student and teacher. We want students to feel comfortable asking questions, trying something unfamiliar and sharing what they’d like to learn.
Our tutors build lessons around each student, combining clear structure with room to explore. Your interests guide the music we work on, while achievable goals help you develop technique, musical understanding and confidence.
Through our Introductory, Development and Specialised pathways, we help you find a suitable starting point and a direction for your learning. Finding the right fit includes both your pathway and your teacher, with open communication helping us adapt as your interests and ambitions develop.
We explain how and why things work, support effective practice habits and encourage students to become independent musicians. For tamariki, lessons also provide opportunities to express themselves, work through challenges and experience the satisfaction of making progress.
Students seeking a formal pathway can prepare for London College of Music examinations. Exams are optional, and we support both those working towards qualifications and those learning for enjoyment.
