An Aucklander who studied classical guitar with Daphne Dobson (Teacher of the technique of Andres Segovia), Robert established his own guitar studios and has also taught at Auckland Education Board music centres throughout Auckland. He was the resident musician at two of Auckland’s leading restaurants, Cazador and Langtons.
Students learn fingerstyle techniques which enable them to play music of all styles. They also learn how to read music. Robert has taught students ranging in age from five to seventy-seven and, for maximum benefit for the student, all lessons are one to one because the student needs the complete attention of the teacher if he or she is to excel as a guitarist.
We had the very good fortune to be referred to Robert Macpherson when our two sons requested to learn to play the guitar. Robert taught them for ten years opening for them, a lifelong love of the guitar and music. We found Robert exceptionally organised, reliable, passionate and kind in his teaching. Robert inspired our sons with his own guitar skills and introduced them to a wide variety of guitarists and their music. My husband also took lessons with Robert for many years. Our sons are adults now who played their music with bands and for the love of it. Robert was an important part of their lives and we highly recommend his teachings.
I have worked with Robert for the past eight years and seen the excellent results of his teaching. He is able to work with students of all ages and has a special skill of being able to work with students of all ethnicities, with various levels of English proficiency. He teaches with his guitar in his hands and demonstrates correct playing techniques to his students. Unlike many other guitar teachers, Robert is also able to teach students how to read music for classical/Spanish style guitar playing. Highly recommended for beginners to master level.

I luckily discovered Robert when my 15 year old son wanted to start guitar lessons. Robert is a very calm teacher, and tutored my son James for four teenage years, which is no mean feat. James is now a very accomplished classical guitarist and enjoys music as part of his life.
Guitar lessons for my son went so well, that my daughter also did a couple of years guitar lessons. Same great result. And to top it off, I started taking guitar lessons myself and loved it; five years now and no intention of stopping. Robert is helping me to keep improving my guitar technique.
Robert is a very patient teacher and a skilled musician. He has access to all types of guitar music and can zero in on whatever type of music you enjoy. I have no hesitation in recommending Robert as a guitar teacher.
