Bio

The McIver Music Academy

Philosophy

To have fun with music and develop a lifelong affinity for music in its myriad forms.

My name is Rosemary McIver. I am a qualified school teacher as well as a registered and qualified piano teacher with over 35 years experience.

Being both a piano teacher and school teacher- specializing in music. This has given me a wide knowledge of teaching many different ages, and developing skills and resources for teaching many ages. It also gave me opportunities to experience working with choirs, some as large as 400 plus and being the director of music for ‘The Nelson Youth Choir’ performing in the Cathedral and ‘The Theatre Royal’. I have also experience in conducting school orchestras, string quartets and recorder groups. Although these don’t directly relate to the piano they have broadened my knowledge of music and experience with teaching music.

I grew up in a very musical family and background. My mother was a pianist and singer and my father Donald McIver  was school teacher, conducting many musical groups including Nelson Civic Choir and was the director of music at Nelson Cathedral.

My inspiration for music, is my passion and comes from a life of emersion in this field, creating a music teacher, specializing in teaching piano.

The Academy offers a range of skills including piano, and keyboard. Lessons include aural tuition, composition, theory and practical with levels ranging from beginners to diploma (Royal Schools and Trinity College).

Teaching Info

Skill and technique work form an integral part of a lesson. Aural and sight reading tuition help to not only create a pianist but a musician. The enjoyment of pieces, gives the student opportunities to put these into practice.

I like to provide lots of opportunities for my students to have fun with piano duets, trios, accompanying and performance skills as they are an excellent way to consolidate students skills.

Theory is an important teaching skill and I feel the knowledge of it, is crucial to the understanding of music and its performance. My students have loved composing their own music and this gives many opportunities to practice theoretical  knowledge as well as playing.

Mrs McIver is incredibly dedicated teacher to my two young daughters. She consistently goes above and beyond to keep them engaged, not just in playing the Piano, but also in learning theory and composing music. We particularly appreciate how she makes the lessons enjoyable while providing new challenges each term. We are very pleased with how much our children have grown musically over the years under her guidance. Kanak Murray- parent.

My daughter truely enjoys learning music with Mrs McIver. Even after we moved to Australia, she was excited to continue her lessons online, a clear reflection of how much she enjoys her time with her teacher. Mrs McIver is an incredibly dedicated and generous teacher. She goes above and beyond, offering her time, attention, and a wide variety of learning resources to support her students. Her lessons are fun, engaging and thoughtfully tailored to each child's learning style and interests. What makes her stand out even more is her genuine passion for teaching. She doesn't treat every minute as a dollar, instead, she focuses on ensuring her students understand and enjoy what they are learning. It's rare to find someone who teaches with both heart and skill, and we feel very lucky to have her in our daughters learning journey. Highly reccomended for anyone looking for a music teacher who truly cares.

Mrs McIver, thank you for all the amazing things you have taught me over the years. You have taught me things at the piano and others like how to be organized. All of your work is much appreciated and you're an amazing teacher. You are one of the main reasons I try as much as I do and strive to continue playing the piano.
