Bio

Suburb: Mt Eden

Instruments: Vocals, Trumpet, Trombone.

I’ve been a professional musician for 28 years. I’m a founding and current member of rock and roll hall of fame members, Supergroove and Principal songwriter and producer of my band Hopetoun Brown who were finalists for the Taite prize in 2017 and have released 3 albums. We have played a lot of high profile music festivals such as WOMAD and Splore and toured New Zealand extensively. I’ll use my knowledge and experience to help you develop sound practical disciplines to help you achieve your musical goals.

I’ve guested on trumpet and Trombone for the likes of Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan, Tami Nielson, Marlon Williams, Lawrence Arabia, Conan Moccasin and many more. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and specialise in Trumpet, lead vocals and trombone.

I teach trumpet and vocals with a focus on the contemporary styles of blues, jazz, soul and pop with a backbone of classical training; reading music, sight singing and basic theory. I also teach improvisation.

Recently I have become a member of Auckland Choral. They’re a large choir of over a hundred singers that regularly perform works from the classical cannon such as Handel’s Messiah at the Town Hall.

I teach vocals at Henderson High School and James Cook High School, Brass at James Cook High School and Green Bay High School.

Teaching Info

I teach trumpet with a thorough grounding in solid technique and classical etudes, I keep it as fun as possible with a wide selection of jazz and blues tunes.

We’ll work on embouchure strength, endurance, flexibility and develop good discipline and practice habits.

With Vocal lessons I’m focused on contemporary styles, from soul classics, to jazz standards via alt country and R&B. I can also teach you how to read music and the rudimentals of sight singing

I like to work closely on vocal arrangements with students and work on a solid foundation of good warm up habits and projection technique. You don’t come home from a 36 date national tour with your voice intact if you have sloppy technique. Let me show you how it’s done.
