Bio
A strong musical foundation is where confidence begins—and where a lifelong love of music quietly takes root.
Since 2005, Genevieve has been guiding students at the piano, following her ATCL diploma in Piano Performance from Trinity College London. Her journey began at Paparoa Street Primary School in Papanui, where for 20 years she nurtured young musicians—preparing them for ABRSM and Trinity examinations, accompanying school operettas, and bringing together end-of-year recitals filled with growth, courage, and music.
A registered piano teacher and Associate Member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand, Genevieve has over two decades of teaching experience across Christchurch schools. At Christchurch Girls’ High School, she supported students through their NCEA performance assessments and offered accompaniment for instrumental exams, alongside teaching in a number of local primary schools.
Over the years, she has worked with hundreds of students—guiding them through both digital and in-person examinations, and helping each one develop not only technical skill, but musical expression, confidence, and a sense of ease at the instrument.
Alongside her teaching, Genevieve is an active vocalist and performer with the band/duo Seymour Stocks, continuing to deepen her connection to voice, storytelling, and live performance. While her teaching remains piano-focused, her love of singing gently shapes her musical approach—encouraging phrasing, listening, and expressive freedom in every student she teaches.
Teaching Info
Each student is unique, and my teaching reflects a holistic, student-centred approach. I draw on a blend of improvisation, duetting, singing, composition, musicianship, sight-reading, and technical work—including scales, arpeggios, and chords—tailoring each lesson to suit the individual. Above all, I listen to what each student wants to learn, guiding them in a way that feels engaging, relevant, and musically fulfilling.
I place strong emphasis on healthy technique, including relaxed movement, good posture, and ease in the body—foundations that support both confidence and long-term musical development.
To keep learning motivating and enjoyable, I offer achievement incentives such as a prize box and a “40 Piece Challenge” in both piano and theory, celebrating progress along the way.
Lessons also have a gentle, home-like atmosphere. My elderly cat, Mistletoe, is a quiet companion, and students are welcome to give her treats or play with her toy if they wish—an often-loved part of the experience.
Students are also invited to take part in optional end-of-year piano recitals held twice yearly at Fat Eddie’s Jazz & Blues Bar—a special opportunity to share their music in a warm and supportive performance setting.
