Catherene is trained in the Royal Schools of Music curriculum and teaches cello, piano and singing. She has played the piano in classical ensembles, bands and musical productions. She has performed in many orchestras since the age of 11, becoming the second principal cellist in the Penang Symphony Orchestra in Malaysia by 14 years of age. After playing with the Auckland Youth Orchestra and St Matthews Chamber Orchestra for several years, Catherene made a switch to playing cello in bands, honing more contemporary and improvisational techniques in the process. She also plays in a cello quartet, performing a combination of classical and modern pieces. She enjoys the unique qualities of different musical genres and is passionate about instilling the love of music in people of all ages by introducing them to new and fresh ways of looking at traditionally classical instruments and trying out different styles of playing.
Catherene is goal oriented in her teaching style and enjoys engaging and working with students to improve their technique, explore an area/genre of music that they are interested in and prepare for performances, assessments and exams. The basics of note reading, theory and aural will be taught to beginners and exams are encouraged if students would like to experience a notable improvement in skills and musical ability which is a natural outcome of the process. Catherene will also work with students wanting to improve their improvisational technique for playing in contemporary or church bands. For older students (10 years and up) wanting to play popular music, Catherene offers training on how to play by ear and support a melody with chords for keyboard/piano.
