I began learning piano at aged eight gaining entry to Adele Franklin’s studio in London. I then studied piano and Alexander method with Peter O’Hagan before I attended the City of Birmingham University Conservatoire. At Birmingham, I studied piano with Joseph Weingarten, and harpsichord with George Miles. After graduation, I continued my studies with Alexander Kelly and Georgina Zellan-Smith at the Royal Academy of Music. I later studied advanced jazz piano with Simon Purcell. I have worked in music education as both a piano teacher and university lecturer in the UK and Australasia. Currently, I teach piano to students of all ages, in person or online, at my studio in Mt. Eden Auckland. I am qualified to teach ABRSM theory and support students undertaking NCEA levels 1,2 and 3. In addition to teaching, I put my skills to practical use and have worked professionally as a pianist, accompanist and conductor. I currently perform with the jazz duo/quartet Standard Deviation.
I teach according to the Alexander method, combined with the pedagogy that has been passed down from my first teacher Adele Franklin, who studied with Isidor Phillipp in Paris. Students are assisted in developing their playing technique while avoiding any one size fits all approach. Each student is respected in what they bring to the piano, and how best to adopt techical advice to suit their playing.
I take students from aged 7 – to work in pairs usually pre-arranged by parents, teenagers who wish to further their playing technique, adult returners who wish to pick up the piano again or those who wish to start learning the piano. I work with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) syllabus for classical and jazz, though happy to work with another school or syllabus.
I work from my own studio that is fully equipped for acoustic or keyboard lessons.
Chris is an exceptional piano teacher who has an enormous amount of knowledge and expertise in music education. He has a great attitude, genuinely cares about his students, and works hard to bring out the best in them with encouragement and praise. Chris has been able to transform my technique so that I feel more comfortable and sound better while playing the piano.
My son has been attending lessons with Dr. Chris Naughton for the past couple of months. I highly recommend him to any aspiring Piano player.
