Elena is an accomplished free-lance cellist based out of Cambridge and Hamilton after recently completing post graduate performance studies with James Tennant at the University of Waikato, receiving her Post-graduate Diploma in performance and First Class Honours. In 2016, Elena graduated from Victoria University in Wellington with a Bachelor of Music in cello performance.
In addition to performing frequently around New Zealand as a soloist, ensemble member and orchestral member, Elena is also teaching suzuki cello at Southwell School, St Paul’s Collegiate School and establishing her own private studio. Teaching is one of her biggest passions, she caters to all ages, abilities and needs, both in group classes and one on one (Note: Skype classes available).
Elena provides a strong technical foundation and shares her love of music in every aspect of her teaching. Elena is in the midst of her training to become a registered suzuki cello teacher.
Elena has a very hands on and active approach to music, she likes to make lessons fun and enjoyable for everyone so she incorporates movement and various educational games into the students learning which have proven to be advantageous especially for children of young ages.
Elena strongly believes in the suzuki philosophy and teaching music like a language with what is called the mother tongue approach. Every child learns the most complex of languages easily through: Exposure, Example, Encouragement, Repetition and Refinement. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and actively participate in their child’s learning so they can they take on the role as the teacher at home; this supports their progress, success and enjoyment.
At the heart of Elena’s teaching, you will find the seven concepts of Suzuki:
Every Child Can Learn
Success Breeds Success
Environment Nurtures Growth
Parental Involvement is Crucial
Children Learn from One Another
Ability Develops Early
Encouragement is Essential
