Music is a magical thing – it can enhance you, connect you with the world, soothe you, and most of all, it is fun! I am here to share this ‘gift’ with people who want to venture into their musical journey. I have played music all my life – I started my musical journey by learning the piano at the age of 4. During my teens, I played in bands as a bassist which led me to record and tour in the U.K. I then started to front bands as a singer songwriter and guitarist in Japan and I eventually released a solo album from a record label in Tokyo. My album landed in several U.S. college charts. As I resumed playing the piano seriously as an adult which resulted in my gaining LTCL Recital in Piano, I have as much passion in helping adults learn the piano as I do in helping young learners. I have been running a successful private studio in Palmerston North for 8 years.
I teach children 5 years old and over and am also a keen educator of mature learners. I teach various genre – from classical to jazz to pop&rock. My students are given the opportunity to discover different styles of music and they gain solid knowledge of music theory which will help them understand music and learn pieces faster and more effectively. Beginners will learn the core basics of music; note reading (this is the ‘language’ of music which will enable you to become an independent learner), beats (the ‘heartbeat’ of music), rhythm, aural, fingering technique, among others. I provide my students with as many opportunities of public performance as possible throughout the year, and also help them prepare for their grade exams (Trinity, ABRSM and NZMEB). The piano is very much a solo instrument and pianists do not have many opportunities to do an ensemble so I try to incorporate duets into lessons as much as possible too.
