Bio

I’ve been a performing musician for the last 30 years, and am passionate about a wide range of genres; from classical to jazz, rock and reggae. I specialise in saxophone, and play alto, tenor, soprano and baritone saxophones in a variety of bands around Canterbury. I have a Bachelor of Music from the University of Canterbury, and a Diploma in Jazz from Art (Canterbury Polytechnic). I am currently Musical Director of the Ellesmere Big Band. Other bands that I write for, and regularly perform and record with include contemporary jazz quartet ‘Under the Kitchen Sink’, 2nd line brass band ‘Ambush Brass All-Stars’, the ‘Funkestra’ Big Band, reggae bands ‘Niuseilah’ and ‘Mana Whanau’ and pop originals band ‘Toroa’ (featuring Lisa Tui).

I am an endorsed artist for Antigua Winds

I also perform on bass and guitar, flute and clarinet.

Since 2005 I have run the Music Department at Ao Tawhiti school (teaching from years 7-13) and am well versed in all areas of NCEA assessment. I am a fully registered teacher.

Teaching Info

I believe in a ‘student centred’ approach, drawing on the strengths and interests of each individual student. I believe that it is important to develop and nurture a love for music – enjoying what you’re doing is the key to success.

Thank you so much for being an awesome music teacher! My classes were never boring if you were there. You have helped me grow and develop so much as a musician and a performer, and your willingness to support me is something I have to thank you for so much.

Christie Simpson

Thank you for being a fantastic music Learning Advisor over the last few years and passing on your musical knowledge. With you I started exploring a wider range of music with the violin, and improvisation, which is such a valuable skill to have as a musician.

lorenz Weston-Salzer

You've been one of the most amazing and influential teachers I've ever known. Without you, I would never have achieved as much as I have in music.
