Kia ora! My name is Phoebe and I am a recent graduate of Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music’s jazz performance program. Since graduating with honours at the end of 2019, I have been busy working as a bass player in Wellington’s jazz, indie, pop and contemporary scenes as well as taking on casual students and tutoring at the New Zealand School of Music.
Originally from the North Shore, I have been playing music and performing since the age of five. While studying I was fortunate to be the principle bass player in the jazz departments Big Band 1 – performing with such artists as Shelly Berg, Alex Sipiagin, and Dewayne Pate. I also work with regular bands such as The Wellington Shake-em-on-Downer’s, Ol’ King Cole, Violet Hirst & the Kind Hearted, Revulva, NOVA, Willy Delphia, Octopus in Heels, Ebony Lamb and various casual jazz ensembles. I am eager to share what I have learnt so far as a working musician.
I am interested in cultivating a comfortable and communicative relationship with students so they can articulate their learning goals and what they want to get out of playing. Students should expect to learn their instrument through a repertoire based approach. I believe the best way to become a good bass player is through playing through songs – especially material you love! I will also teach improvisation skills, technique, theory and musicianship skills. I am comfortable tutoring NCEA material and preparing students for gigs, auditions and assessments.
