Bio
Yuri was born and educated in Russia, graduation with a Bachelors and Masters in Music from the Novosibirsk State Conservatoire named after M.Glinka. After his graduation, Yuri began playing as part of the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra as well as being a tutor at the Novosibirsk State Conservatoire. In 1993 he began working in the BASSO (Bilkent Symphony Orchestra) in Ankara, Turkey and teaching at the Music School of Bilkent University. In 1996, he moved to New Zealand and began performing as part of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra where he still plays today. He also teaches double bass privately as well as being a teacher at Christchurch School of Music and previously at the University of Canterbury.
When he’s not performing or teaching, Yuri is an avid sports fan, mainly supporting Chelsea football club.
Teaching Info
I like to personalize my lessons for each student based on their level, experience and age. I have taught ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall syllabuses, however, I’m also happy for my students to not do exams and can set up a curriculum based on Suzuki levels, Russian school methods or a mix and match of both.
I highly encourage parents to be active in their children’s musical education and am happy to have them sit in on lessons, and to communicate through email or phone with them with any queries they have outside the lessons.
