My name is Hector and I work as a musician in Wellington. I began learning the piano at the age of 5 and singing at the age of 10. After gaining Grade 8 on the piano at the age of 16, I completed a Bachelor of Music at the NZ School of Music, entering on the Therle Drake Scholarship. These days I teach both privately and at schools, and perform and record as a pianist with a number of groups playing all styles of music.

I have been teaching for more than 3 years now at the Wellington Music Centre in Island Bay and Miramar North, and for the past year with Dynamite Music in Newtown and in Miramar, as well as privately.

As a singer I was a member of the 2015-16 NZ Secondary Students’ Choir and have been involved in 3 Days Bay Opera productions as a chorus member.

On top of this I have composed, recorded, mixed, produced and released music of my own. I really love being a musician and want to share this with people through teaching!

Teaching Info

When teaching I wish to develop in all my students a strong interest and passion for their instrument and music in general. Lessons can include technique, musicality, musicianship, theory, sight reading, improvisation and performance skills. For piano and theory, I am happy to help students prepare for examinations with NZMEB, Trinity, ABRSM etc. Perhaps more than other teachers, I am interested in students learning proper technique and sight reading, as they are invaluable skills. My experience performing in a wide variety of settings and genres allows to me teach a real range of styles, and helps me make the learning experience enjoyable and fruitful for students.
