Bio
I am a pianist, composer and producer based in Wellington with places open for new students of all ages and abilities.
I have toured Aotearoa and the world with acts like The Teskey Brothers, Revulva, Rachel Andie, The Unknot, and many others, performing at prestigious venues such as Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz Festival, BBC Maida Vale, Austin City Limits, and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
I have released two albums of original music: Hector McLachlan – Forest Music (2018), The Hectet – Here Comes The Hectet (2025), and I have contributed to recording projects, such as Revulva – Revulva (2024) and RABBIT as King of the Ghosts – The Rabbit’s Advice (2025).
I hold a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at the Piano with First Class Honours from The New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōki. I attained NZMEB Grade 8 Piano and Grade 5 Theory as a teenager. I really love music, and enjoy sharing my passion with others.
Teaching Info
When teaching I wish to develop in all my students a strong interest and passion for their instrument and music in general. Lessons can include technique, musicality, musicianship, theory, sight reading, improvisation and performance skills, as well as composition and songwriting. For piano and theory, I am happy to help students prepare for examinations with NZMEB, Trinity, ABRSM etc. I am interested in piano students learning proper technique and sight reading, as they are invaluable skills. My experience performing in a wide variety of settings and genres allows to me teach a real range of styles, and helps me to make the learning experience enjoyable and fruitful for students.
