Bio

Hi there, I am a professional jazz musician and teacher working out of Mt Roskill, Auckland.  I have been teaching privately since I was 17, and have continued to teach privately and in schools throughout my studies.

I recently graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, and will be returning for my Honours/Masters degree next year.  Upon graduating I received the KBB Music Jazz Woodwind Player of the Year Prize, a scholarship given to the most oustanding woodwind performer in the jazz faculty.

I am currently engaged in a number of jazz-based acts around Auckland, including a few groups of my own.  I have played regularly and recorded with a number of jazz orchestras, namely the Queen City Big Band, and have had the privilege of working with some of New Zealand’s best musical minds.

Teaching Info

As a teacher, I greatly encourage a student-led learning environment, and enjoy fostering curiosity and passion alongside a strong base of technical studies.  I like to place a decent amount of emphasis on aural training and music theory, as this helps provide context for what they will be learning on their instrument.  I am a reasonably accomplished piano player, and use piano as a tool for communicating concepts visually and aurally as well as verbally.

At the end of the day, the most important thing to me is that the student feels free to ask questions and form their own goals – I am simply here to answer those questions, facilitate those goals, and occasionally give a nudge in the right direction!
