Recently finishing his master’s degree at the Te Kōki New Zealand School of Music, Chris Beernink is a professional musician based in Wellington. As well as playing various concerts and gigs around Wellington, Chris is a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, playing both double and electric bass in the main concert band and jazz orchestra. Chris also plays electric guitar for the RNZAF’s covers band which plays in various styles including funk, rock and metal.
Chris currently runs the jazz component of the New Zealand School of Music’s Young Musicians Programme, which focuses on both accelerating the learning of exceptional high-school musicians and introducing students to the various styles taught at the programme.
When taking on a student, I endeavour to work with them in creating a plan that allows them to learn the music that the students themselves want to focus on. Because of this strategy, students will always have a clear view of what they need to be working on and also what they will be taught.
I prefer teaching in a holistic manner so that students will not only learn how to play the music, but also learn about the context of the pieces and the musicianship required to it, giving greater musical foundations for they’re practicing.
Students will work from a combination of seminal method books and custom worksheets so that they can learn the most appropriate material at their own pace.
