I’ve been a music tutor at “MAINZ” ‘The Music & Audio Institute of NZ’ for over 19 years, where I’ve taught band performance, guitar & bass tuition as well as Applied theory/Aural and composition/song writing.
For the last 38 years I have been a professional musician, music teacher, session & a touring musician. I’ve played on many recordings and produced and co produced many albums. As well as working with artists for their releases and laying demos down. Taking songs from the bedroom to the world.
I’ve performed live both locally and abroad with varied artists including: Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Jordan Luck (The Exponents), The Idles, Greg Johnson, Zowie, Dave McArtney (Hello sailor, pink flamingos) & The “death of love”.
I’ve supported many international acts such as U2, The B52’s, Cold Chisel, The Proclaimers, Hunters & Collectors, Albert Collins, Icehouse, Simply Red, Melissa Etheridge.
I’ve written and/or performed and co-produced on over 30 albums and on sound tracks and tv themes such as TV ads for Mitsubishi Motors, Ford Motors, Sony, Cadburys, honey puffs and tv show soundtrack and theme song work on city life, Shortland street and What Now.
I feel that my main skill set is the practical application of music theory, composition, guitar and bass playing & band performance.
Music theory can be a dull but also an intriguing and amazing tool once applied and I have found that students engage more when they hear it, play it and write it.
I understand how practical music theory is applied in today’s song writing, performance & improvising and being able to apply these real world skills in today’s competitive music environment, I can offer students the confidence and practical knowledge needed to succeed. I have found that this approach works very well with students who struggle with music theory and they seem to enjoy the process.
I also have a column in NZ Musician Magazine called ‘Song Writing Hacks’.
I keep up with the latest techniques and styles on the following instruments:
Guitar, Bass guitar,Upright/Double Bass, Chapman Stick and varied ethnic stringed instruments including the Sitar, Saz, Banjo and Charango.
I am up to date with current recording software such as Logic pro, as I use this in my song writing and recording sessions and applied theory.
I also have a passion for world music’s where I have taught world music instrumentation classes as a part of composition courses.
I currently have two teaching locations one in Parnell, Auckland and one on Waiheke Island with online lessons also available.
Lessons are taught on a weekly basis either online or in person. personalised custom lessons, all styles/genres and levels and ages.
I like to be able to provide the student with what they are passionate about and want to achieve whether its the basics to making this their profession and whether you’re a beginner or more established on your instrument.
I have extensive teaching experience teaching all ages, levels and styles of music from Pop to Metal and everything in-between.
Guitar and Bass Lessons:
As an accomplished bassist & guitarist with over 38 years experience in the studio, touring and teaching privately and at Music Institutions I want to teach you whatever you are wanting to learn and achieve. As well as helping to guide you and teach you Scales, Technique, Chords, Harmony and improvisation skills.
The Chapman Stick is an electric musical instrument devised by the late Emmett Champan in the 1970’s. Its a member of the guitar family. The Stick usually has 10 – 12 individually tuned strings and is used to play bass lines, melody lines, chords and textures. Designed as a fully polyphonic chordal instrument it can also cover several of these music parts simultaneously.
I have been a tutor in Music Theory and Aural for over 38 years and I understand how practical music theory is applied in today’s song writing, performance & improvising and being able to apply these real world skills in today’s competitive music environment, I can offer students the confidence and practical knowledge needed to succeed.
I have found that this approach works very well with students who struggle with music theory and they seem to enjoy the process.
‘At the end of the day I want you to enjoy and have fun playing whatever instrument you choose to explore’
