Bio

Pro Bass Lessons was established in 2004 by professional bass player and music educator Scott Sutherland with the aim of setting a new standard in private music instruction for the bass guitar in New Zealand.

Scott provides high quality personalised music tuition catering to bass players of all ages and abilities, from gigging professionals through to absolute beginners. Regardless of your current ability or aspirations Scott can help you take meaningful steps toward realising your musical goals.

Over the past decade Scott Sutherland has worked with in excess of 300 bass players. Many of his former students have gone on to achieve prominence in the music scene both here and abroad. Scott has mentored the bass players in some of New Zealand’s finest bands including The Veils, Cut Off Your Hands, David Dallas, Great North, Sherpa, Motor City Family Funk and The Earlybirds.

As well as having his own private teaching practice in Mt Eden, Scott also teaches bass guitar at St. Kentigern College in Auckland.

BIO

Scott Sutherland has harboured a passion for the bass guitar for most of his life. An equally enduring passion for music education led Scott to establish Pro Bass Lessons with the aim of aiding aspiring bass players in their pursuit of excellence on the instrument.

Having immersed himself in the sounds of funk, soul and disco as a teenager Scott got his first break playing live and in the studio for many of New Zealand’s top house music producers including Subware and Cuffy & Leon as well as legendary New York disco house producers Mateo & Matos. These formative experiences as a late teen played a large part in his decision to pursue music as a career. Since that time Scott has garnered a reputation as a high quality bassist and one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded music educators.

Scott’s main music project over has been the indie rock band Motocade. With Motocade he has toured throughout New Zealand, Australia and the United States and has performed at the APRA Silver Scrolls, NZ Fashion Week, CMJ Music Festival in New York and the Big Day Out.

MY APPROACH

In my view a teacher is someone who opens windows of insight. A teacher should be thought of as a navigator who uses their knowledge, experience and expertise to maximise the students potential and keep them on track to reach their musical goals in the most efficient manner possible.

In essence my role as a teacher is to challenge you to be the best that you can be and in turn aid you in your quest to meet that challenge through direction, encouragement and evaluation. My value as a music teacher ultimately lies in the knowledge and experience I have accrued in traveling the very road upon which you are setting out on and in helping countless others to make that same journey.

"I've been a client of Pro Bass Lessons for around 2 years and can say that the quality of service offered by Scott is truly exceptional. In particular, Scott blends a true artisan approach to music and bass with a well run, professional business - he is not only a well accomplished, serious bass player, but also a well rounded musician with a true love for all aspects of the craft. I found he was able to teach the technical aspects of the bass across the genres I was interested in - rock, jazz, funk, while also developing my music sensibility by building my understanding of melody and rhythm with the goal of improvisation. Scott also imparts some interesting insights into the history of music and different players along the way which is very engaging. All up, I'm finding the lessons to a good blend of theory and practice, well structured, but also flexible enough to ensure your particular goals and desired outcomes are achieved. I would highly recommend Pro Bass Lessons for players of any level, but especially those interested in developing not just the technical aspects of bass playing, but also as a musician - able to think on your feet, improvise and play with other musicians."

"I have been receiving bass lessons from Scott for the past 6 years or so and have at no point regretted it whatsoever. My playing has improved immensely over these years, which Scott's lessons always perfectly prepared and catered to my individual requirements and tastes, covering all aspects of theory, reading, technique etc. and a huge number of songs to expand my repertoire and view of different styles and genres of music. I can safely say I would not be the musician I am today without Scott and he has played a large part in my decision to continue with music in my tertiary studies."

"I have attended lessons with Scott at Pro Bass Lessons for a number of years and have found every single step of the process absolutely invaluable. Scott is a consummate professional, always being very well prepared for each lesson, keeping close tabs on the progress of his students and having a seemingly endless library of resources always on hand." Scott is an extremely skilled player and knowledgeable musician, and a gifted teacher. He is patient, observant, consistent in his methods and secure in his approach. No part of the process of playing the bass and being a musician is neglected - the programme covers not just the playing of the instrument but a comprehensive study of rhythm, musical structures, melody and harmony, listening and reading skills, theory and, of course, building an awesome repertoire! All ranges of styles and preferences can be covered, be it rock, blues, funk, jazz, hip-hop, reggae or metal. As a massive music nerd myself, I have always found Scott to be full of interesting facts and understandings of the history of the music he teaches. Last, but certainly not least, Scott is one of the most positive, upbeat and friendly people I have met. he is always welcoming, engaged and ready to get to work with a smile. I have met several players who have also learnt at Pro Bass Lessons and they all speak of Scott with a well-deserved fondness, admiration and respect. If you live in Auckland and are thinking of starting to learn the bass or looking to further your skills, I would never hesitate to recommend Scott."

“When you’re learning to play the bass, you don’t just need to find a great bass player, you need to find a great bass teacher, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in Scott Sutherland. Scott takes a very structured, methodical approach to the learning process, building on each skill in a really seamless way. I started lessons with Scott as a total newbie, feeling rather nervous that I had never played an instrument or studied music before. Scott’s genuinely warm and engaging manner put me instantly at ease. In a short space of time, Scott taught me how to read music, and built my skill level up to the point where I could master much more difficult pieces than I ever thought would be possible. Whenever I felt that I’d hit a wall, either with motivation or technical ability, Scott’s reassurance and enthusiasm got me right back on track and over each hurdle. I particularly liked the way that Scott would find songs for me to learn that fitted exactly with my musical taste; nothing puts a fire in your belly like wanting to master a song you love! Whether you’re brand new to the bass, or a seasoned player looking to build on your existing skill set, you will benefit hugely from taking lessons with Scott. I can’t recommend him highly enough; he is a brilliant teacher! Sign up for lessons with a true master and you’ll never look back!”

Lucy Quinn

"A few years ago I was stuck in a rut with my bass playing, finding progress slow and tedious. I was skeptical about getting bass lessons however, as I already had a Bachelor of Music under my belt and thought that anything I needed to learn I could teach myself. Now I regret not getting lessons from him sooner... I began getting lessons with Scott and was instantly blown away by his professionalism, the individualized content of his lessons, the depth of his knowledge and his passion for music. My progress skyrocketed as his structured lessons gave me the direction that I lacked, his experience highlighted areas for improvement I hadn't even considered and his vast knowledge enhanced my skills as a live bass player, a recording artist, composer and improviser. Anyone, from a beginner to an experienced bass player, would benefit hugely from having Scott as their teacher."
