I’ve taught at Massey and currently teach at Victoria Universities for the NZSM. My past NZSM pupils include Richard Thai, Jale Baxendale, Oscar Laven, Hayden Hockley and many more well known Wellington based saxophonists. My current pupils include some of NZ’s brightest hopes including Frank Talbot, Louisa Williamson, Nicholas Baucke-Mansell, Elizabeth Hocking and more. I’ve taught Degree, BA and Masters students and fellow professionals plus private tuition for all. My professional career has taken me around the world and I’ve played with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Chaka Khan, Barry White, Donna Summer, Shirley Bassey, Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, Dianna Ross and most of the greatest names to come out of the Mowtown label plus 100’s of others too many to mention. I have enjoyed a full-time career here in New Zealand and was the lead Saxophone player for the Dancing With The Stars for 5 series from 2005 onward plus innumerable tours with many of NZ’s greatest names. I was the lead alto sax player for the Rodger Fox Big Band for 4 years. I’ve been a featured artist on 3 Tui Jazz Album of the Year awards and have led my own bands and played in many others. I’ve also taught at many Wellington schools and was the Conductor for the Gisborne Youth Concert Band for 3 years and took them to Gold Medal Awards at the New Zealand Concert Band Annual Championships. I also present a radio show for Arrow FM 92.7 every Wednesday called Jazz Club with Alex Nyman.
What can you expect from me? A demanding and caring teacher who knows how to draw the best out of every pupil. My work ethic is strong and I practice what I preach. My teaching days at the NZSM in Wellington begin at 5.00am for my own practicing (alongside all that I do at home) and teaching commences at 9.00am I have recording facilities for students and have a full compliment of instruments on which to demonstrate. I am a very strong flute player and play all the flutes from piccolo to bass flute. My goal is to bring each student to the very peak of their ability whilst with me and lead them to achieve even greater things once out in the musical world of their choosing be it amateur or professional. My teaching style is informal and friendly. I consider it my moral obligation to share my 42 years of playing experience with students who are willing to work hard and who strive to achieve perfection.
